I'd never paid too much attention to the physically challenged problems until I became disabled myself. I live in Cambodia in the countryside so my situation is completely different from the city, however, in my experience, it all comes down to people's kindness. Thank God, I have been showered with kindness ever since I got sick!

Been sick with surgeries before and even thought I am younger, I could barely walk up to a an elevator let alone trying to wheel myself up a ramp. So these devices or ramps are not just for one person, but for all to use and they should be working as one day one of us might need them. A great television show that inspired millions.

Beautifully and respectfully done. We have made great progress the past few decades in making public buildings and offices handicap accessible. Legislation being passed to protect their rights has truly helped. Its the pioneers like this man that have paved the way. Full inclusions in schools for those kids who used to be forced to either stay home and be home schooled or being sent off to special schools in order to get a proper education have become a memory of the past. Life is difficult enough to maneuver thru when youre not in a wheelchair.Theres no need in adding to those challenges for the handicapped and disabled. Its not perfect by a long shot, but its a work in progress.

I've never really thought about this topic until I became disabled myself. I walk with the aid of a walker, I have severe multiple sclerosis which doesn't allow me to walk or run because throughout my life when things got tough I ran. Now, I have to face even the harsher situations without running, I have to face my feelings and I am learning not to identify with the situation first and second to let everything pass because only if you keep thinking about something or someone you keep them alive in your memory. Just like the man, I really wanted to take revenge on the people who deliberately mistreated me or spoiled my food just to piss me off. I lost it a few times, broke a couple of dished, and pushed a small motorcycle down (deliberately parked in front of my room to obstruct my movements)... I cried, screamed my lungs out in desperation but nothing changed. It was only when I calmed myself down, with the help of the Divine - with whom I was also mad at - that things started to change as if everything had been a mirror of what I was thinking and feeling. If I had had access to a weapom, I would have killed myself to put an end to my misery but apparently, I have to go through this experience to integrate my dark side, the side that I denied existed in me. I judge people because of their lifestyle and not only who am I to judge but why am I any better? I spent many years of my life living a spiritual life, helping the less fortunate, distributing food, praying, doing meditation in Buddhist monasteries practicing austerities, fasting, chanting mantras but it's only during these dark times that I've learned to see the One in everyone and everywhere. I still have a long way to go but I 'm on my way.
My lesson : don't be a bigot, feel with your heart and let your mind rest for the matters of the heart. Be here now!

“Nobody sees anybody truly but all through the flaws of their own egos. That is the way we all see ...each other in life. Vanity, fear, desire, competition-- all such distortions within our own egos-- condition our vision of those in relation to us. Add to those distortions to our own egos the corresponding distortions in the egos of others, and you see how cloudy the glass must become through which we look at each other. That's how it is in all living relationships except when there is that rare case of two people who love intensely enough to burn through all those layers of opacity and see each other's naked hearts.” Tennessee Williams.

Yep everything is for a person who can walk and reach. Its hard to find anyone to help u any more. Omg the bus lady and how no one can help u and yep so true how it is. I cant even ask a person to push me when I need help. Everyone thinks people like us will take everyone to court over everything. Makes me sick how it is and how u can get even wheelchair that moves with a motor but its hell getting one of them even. Even though u need it and have to have it. Mail is a problem as well when u cant get your mail. It makes everything better when u have no help on anything. Some times people think u can do things u cant do just from the way u look. But they got no idea how we or what we deal with on health problems as well. Looks r deceiving. Then u got people who do know u r rl sick but have denial to it and tells others there putting on a act but u can prove there not telling the truth. Life is fun with people who don't care. If u also think being on SSI gives good money u r wrong as well pays crap even if u worked. Hard to make ends meet. Some r lucky just to have a person to help and some take advantage of u if they do have a person. Just have to love this not so great world.

I was sick for several years, lost so-called friends, my savings, not to mention struggled for additional years to recapture some degree of health and sanity. There is help, there are resources, but you have to know where to look and never EVER give up. This show is about having faith against often seemingly insurmountable odds. Keep watching it and pray for inspiration and guidance.

    Very interesting episode
    observations seen so far
    An intolerant Karen
Buses that allow wheel chairs to be lifted into the busses (not seen any here in South Africa even now 20 odd years after this episode was aired was
The bus drivers comment when mark offered to take him off the bus that ether they or the bus company could be sued
In America that seems to be a norm sadly suing for for petty things
The companies firing the guy for late coming and the fear of fire and who would carry him down if there was a fire
Here in South Africa now that would be called discrimination and the company would be heavily fined for doing so
Also here in South Africa there are quotas of what percentage of the staff is white, black, coloured, Indian handicapped and by masculinity
You fail to abide by that it’s tickets for the company
But there was also something else that shown through and that was the undying love his wife had for him
A strong woman supporting her husband is something very special especially when the wife or husband is handicapped
But this episodes also highlights several other issues
The biggest been the handicap of the people who ignore the plight of the handicapped
Buildings are built with no regard to access for the handicapped
Disabled parkings are been selfishly usurped by able bodied people who think it’s tight to park in handicapped, disabled or aged parkings with no regard to others
The Karen At the Beginning of the episode attitude towards him was totally disgusting and un called for
This is an episode that should be shown and viewed to see what life is like on the other side

First of all, I've reported you for using my name as an insult. Also, I used public transportation gor many years as I lived in a big city. Many handicapped people boarded and not once did I ever see one of them spoken to or treated disrespectful, so much of this is contrived to support a story line. As far as using a person's name as an insult, I'd say that is not keeping guidelines respectful which is the condition for commenting

This part was the most disappointing of the ep--he had good cause to be angry, but where was the context? Besides frustration at having to struggle through his handicap, in the days before the Americans with Disabilities Act brought needed changes, there was absolutely no reason why he should have just suddenly decided to go postal on those creeps. He had not undergone any kind of continuous mistreatment or bullying that I saw, he had a wife who clearly adored him and supported him--hi a life was great. The gun scene was completely wasted footage, and completely unrealistic.

A legitimate disability? And how do you determine that? By something, you can see with your own eyes? Have you ever tried to claim disability? if not, you have no idea what kind of games they play. If you are missing a limb, it's easier to get disability than if you are suffering from something people cannot see with their own eyes. And jumping through hoops, playing their stupid games is impossible for most people who have mental and emotional problems, but they are the ones who are abused in the system because their disability is not believed. They are forced to do irrelevant tasks and called names and made fun of because they "still have all their limbs." And this is America! people without legs are not abused as much anymore, thank God, but people who suffer from invisible disabilities are still being abused as they seek help. Starr Meadows may be one of these invisibles.
